While thinking about my contribution to Zeitgeist, I remembered an an image which emerged on Twitter by user “sanverde” on November 10th of 2017 with the legend “What a time to be alive”. The tweet picture shows the building of the Italian brand Gucci in Shanghai underneath a propaganda advertisement for the Communist Party of China. What is interesting here to me from a typographic point of view is how the two antagonists match visually in the public space, as a properly harmoniously designed Gucci Communism aesthetic - a somewhat zeitgeist. And despite being on the other hand a clear symbol of effective aggressive authoritarianism.
